Do Justice. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly.
A Hub of Learning and Practice around Community Issues
The Micah Center for Social Justice Learning and Practice is a new initiative to connect people interested in making our community more just and equitable. Together, we will lift up the good work being done in the greater Marlborough-Hudson area and examine the ideas that drive that good work. At the heart of its work will be a quarterly forum that features a speaker, a Q&A, and time for conversation.
How to Fight Racism
Members of Saint Stephen Lutheran Church read the above book by author Jemar Tisby. Calumet host- ed a read and discuss Zoom sponsored by the Ani-Racism Advisory Board of the New England SYNOD and ECLA with Dr. Tisby . Many members of the SSLC community participated.
In response, the Micah Center hosted a focus group exploring how our church community can play a role in fighting racism. Approximately 20 members attended, and we had a very honest and productive discussion where members shared their ideas.
Take aways:
We will work with the New England SYNOD Anti-Racism Advisory Board to develop best practices for Racial Justice Actions. Engage in efforts led by the board that lobby for racial equity and Justice.
Education of our community will continue through Newsletters, sharing of information on Black History, and other SYNOD led events.
Juneteenth - Wed 6/19/2024 was suggested as a goal to announce our next steps. Union soldiers en- forced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865.
Service Week will focus on racial justice and other social justice centered activities.
Invitations will be made to invite more community members to worship with us. Specifically, to be dis- bursed at SSLC’s Clothing Giveaway. Investigate ways to invite children and youth to events like "Messy Service" hosted monthly by St. Mark's Southborough".
Host worship services with music and worship styles that are diverse and atypical to usual Lutheran styles of Worship. Host an International Pot Luck event.
