Pentecost is Sunday, May 14th

Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost, and the parishioners of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Marlborough, will take the red theme to heart on May 15. Members and friends are urged to wear red and bring red geraniums to the 9:30 am worship service. To commemorate the "speaking in tongues" when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples on the first Pentecost, portions of the Bible reading for the day will be read simultaneously in a variety of languages.
            Pastor Cliff Gerber notes that Pentecost is an important church holiday, but seldom marked with the celebration that accompanies Christmas and Easter, for example.
            "Pentecost is the third of the great festivals of the church year along with Christmas and Easter, and the most neglected of the three," he said. "It is the festival that celebrates the church, sometimes called "the Birthday of the Church."
            Bringing geraniums on Pentecost comes at a propitious time, since the church's annual clean up day will be held the day before, May 14, and the grounds will be ready for the Pentecost Garden the donated flowers will create.
